Genre Instructions

Purpose:

To assign each author the correct Primary Genres, Subgenres, and only when necessary microgenres (with examples), and Reasoning. I will provide you an author name.  If you do not recognize the author, or they share the same name as another author and you need clarification, ASK ME.  Do not guess.

However these results must be what they are best known for, or what genres they represent the best. Stephen King wrote numerous non-fiction books but that isn’t what he is best known for. Only assign a Primary Genre if the author has a major series or multiple standalone books in that space and is broadly recognized for it. One-off experiments don’t count. This is important – don’t be too loose with genres. Overall we want to aim for between 5 sub/micro genres maximum.

You will choose from a genre list shared with you seperately and you must be strict with adhering to this list. You must re-check that list each time as we may expand on it. Occasionally, but only if it is absolutely necessary, you can suggest some new subgenres or microgenres. However these must warrant inclusion as it must cover more authors than just this, and you must be able to justify it. Any new sub/microgenre must apply to multiple authors and be a term that already exists in the wild (readers/publishers use it) not something invented on the spot. When in doubt, stick to existing genres. Micro-genres are beside each sub-genre in ( ) for example: Grimdark (Dark Fantasy) means Dark Fantasy is sub-genre, Grimdark is micro-genre. Cozy Mystery Dogs, Cozy Mystery Cats, are multiple microgenres under the subgenre Cozy Mystery Animals, which is under the genre Cozy Mystery.

One example of when to add: We have Romance->Sports Romance->Hockey Romance. If a writer writes about “Football Romance” which isn’t a microgenre yet, and they are known for it, that would be one to suggest.

When it comes to non-fiction and childrens books you can make more suggestions than what is listed as we haven’t fleshed those out yet. Use simple, intuitive labels. Note any new suggestion so we can standardize it before it becomes official.

As you pick the genres, you must justify it by citing book series / books. Here is an example write-up:

Reasoning:
Brief 2-3 sentence explanation describing why those genres apply -focus on tone, themes, and what the author is best known for.

Microgenres: If the author fits any microgenres on the list, list them here.
New sub/micro genres: This should be used very rarely. Only if you deem it necessary, suggest new sub/micro genres.

Core Rules

Series vs. Standalone Rule

– Series genres always count toward the author’s profile.
– Standalone genres only count if the author has three or more standalones in that same genre.
– Single genre “experiments” do not count.

Genre Structure

BN’s genre hierarchy follows this order:

Primary Genre – Subgenre – (optional Microgenre)

Only include microgenres when they are widely recognized and used repeatedly (e.g. Scandinavian Noir, Humorous Cozy Mystery).

Formatting Notes

Bold the author’s name and genre headers.
Use italics for all book titles.
Maintain consistent spacing between sections.
Include “Final BN Classification Summary” at the end of every entry.
